State Sen. Sharif Street, D-Philadelphia, is the prime sponsor of a proposed amendment presented as a “fix to a drafting error in our election code.”

The amendment would exempt Philadelphia from the statewide prohibition on county commissioners overseeing elections in which questions are to appear on the ballot.

Street said that because this law is designed to guard against conflicts of interest in counties where the commissioners act as both the executive and legislative branches, it should not apply to Philadelphia, where the legislative duties are carried out by City Council and the city commissioners oversee elections.
