Public Pensions

The Pennsylvania Senate in a rare Sunday session on June 4 gave its approval on a 40-9 vote to SB 1, a measure aimed at reforming public pensions.

The state House of Representatives on June 8 passed the bill on a 143-53 vote. Gov. Tom Wolf applauded bipartisan support for the compromise bill, saying he wanted to work with lawmakers to “get this bill across the finish line.”

Wolf is expected to sign the measure—which shifts newly-hired school district employees from fully taxpayer-funded plans to hybrid plans like private-sector 401(k) plans—into law. It is also designed to result in cost savings to the public sector, Wolf said in the wake of the Senate vote.
