As one of the leading securities lawyers in the nation, Sonnenfeld has a distinguished 45-year career. He joined Morgan Lewis in 1974 after serving as law clerk to Judge Joseph S. Lord, then chief judge of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, and Sonnefeld is now the longest-tenured partner at the firm.

A recent victory highlighted his skill in defending bet-the-company cases in multiple courts. He represented Hewlett-Packard, a Silicon Valley powerhouse for decades, in a high-profile securities class action that alleged HP and its former CEO Mark Hurd committed securities fraud by touting their high ethical standards while Hurd hid an illicit relationship with a company contractor. Enter Sonnenfeld, who has a long history of counseling Fortune 500 companies in crisis. The Hurd matter involved litigation in various courts, including the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and Delaware Chancery Court. After a California federal judge dismissed the case in June 2014, the Ninth Circuit Court recently affirmed the dismissal.
