Pennsylvania Rep. John T. Galloway, D-Bucks, issued a memorandum announcing his intention to introduce legislation allowing magistrate judges to create drugs courts in Pennsylvania.

According to Galloway's memo, there are 42 drug courts in 67 Pennsylvania counties. Galloway said his bill would allow magisterial district judges to establish drug courts “from available funds” similar to the Pennsylvania courts of common pleas and the Municipal Court of Philadelphia.

“The goal of my proposal is to extend access to individualized drug treatment programs in an effort to curb the growing opioid epidemic across the state,” Galloway said in his memo dated June 9.
