Following is a listing of executive and legislative action for the week of July 10. At press time members of the General Assembly were in recess subject to the call of the president of the Senate and speaker of the House.

Inspector General

Gov. Tom Wolf on July 11 announced he would sign SB 527, sponsored by Sen. Ryan Aument, R-Lancaster, into law. The bill explicitly grants the General Assembly's authority to the Office of State Inspector General and describes its powers and duties. The office was established in 1987 and continued to operate under an executive order.

A statement from the Wolf administration said the governor decided to sign the bill into law “in the spirit of bipartisan compromise.”

In addition to granting subpoena power to the office for its internal investigations, the bill allows the IG to investigate and file criminal charges for certain welfare fraud crimes. Under the new law, the state inspector general will be appointed by the governor to serve concurrent with the governor's term in office unless removed. A state inspector general may not seek election to a political office while serving.

Work Zones

The Pennsylvania Senate on July 10 gave its approval on a 45-3 vote to a measure aimed at curtailing the number of accidents and deaths caused by reckless driving and speeding.
