Navient, the federal government's student loan servicer, can't shake claims that it mishandled students' payments and miscommunicated with them about repayment plans, a federal judge has ruled.

U.S. District Judge Robert D. Mariani of the Middle District of Pennsylvania denied Navient's request to toss the complaint filed against it by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau under the Dodd-Frank Wall Street and Consumer Protection Act.

In his opinion in CFPB v. Navient, Mariani said Navient's miscommunications about borrowers' repayment plan renewal deadlines, as well as the company's misallocation of payments, led to negative consequences for borrowers.
