Following is a listing of executive action from the week of Aug. 28. At press time, the House was set to reconvene Sept. 11 and the Senate on Sept. 18.

Opioid Crisis

Gov. Tom Wolf announced Aug. 31 that the more than 93,000 users registered with Pennsylvania's Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) have in the past year helped to significantly curb the practice of “doctor-shopping” for Schedule II-IV controlled substance prescription drugs.

“In its first year, we have seen an incredible 86 percent drop in patients 'doctor-shopping' because of professionals using the PDMP,” Wolf said. “It has played a key role in increasing communication to not only reduce the number of unnecessarily prescribed opioids and benzodiazepines, but also getting patients with substance abuse disorders the help they need. In September, the PDMP will become even stronger with the launch of a new initiative that connects it to patients' electronic health records, providing near-instant access to critical prescription history.”

Campus Safety

Attorney General Josh Shapiro on Aug. 31 unveiled a new initiative focused on preventing drug addiction, alcohol abuse and sexual assault, as well as raising mental health awareness, on Pennsylvania's college campuses.

The campus safety initiative will highlight those four key areas at a series of roundtable discussions across the state this fall, according to a press release.
