On March 23, Widener Law Commonwealth is set to hold a symposium examining child and family protection in the courts.

This daylong program, “Children in the Courts: A Developed or Developing System,” engages in the question of whether children and parents are properly protected in court proceedings including child custody and dependency hearings.

Throughout the day, participants will hear the different perspectives on this issue from a wide variety of academics, practitioners and judges.

In addition, you will hear from a panel comprised of a local guardian ad litem, solicitor and parent attorneys who will discuss potential ethical issues practitioners face when representing a party involved in a child proceeding.

Four substantive and 1.5 ethics CLE credits are available.

Speakers

Stradley Ronon Stevens & Young partner Mark E. Chopko served as a panelist for school administrators of Catholic higher education at the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities' meeting on Feb. 3 in Washington, D.C.

Chopko's presentation discussed civil law realities of being a Catholic institution of higher education and explored corporate structures, employment, regulatory and church and state issues confronting college leadership.

The presentation was paired with an exploration of canon law issues.

Chopko chairs Stradley Ronon's nonprofit and religious organizations practice group and advises clients, including colleges and universities, in matters involving structural, business, governance, regulatory and complex litigation.

He specializes in defending religious organizations and also teaches a seminar on church-state law at Georgetown University Law Center.

A former general counsel for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, he has participated in more than 30 Supreme Court cases as counsel for religious groups in friend-of-the-court briefs.

On Feb. 9, Patricia Hamill, a Conrad O'Brien partner, spoke in Chicago on “Lessons Learned and Best Practices From a Title IX Respondent's Attorney.”

She spoke to the Chicagoland Title IX Consortium, an organization consisting of over 40 higher education institutions, seeking to enhance knowledge, understanding and application of Title IX policies and resources to further gender parity and reduce sexual misconduct.

Hamill is chair of Conrad O'Brien's Title IX, due process and campus discipline practice, where she represents college students nationwide who have been subjected to campus disciplinary proceedings or who have been suspended, expelled from or otherwise disciplined by their colleges following campus disciplinary hearings for alleged sexual misconduct or other alleged student code violations.

Elected and Appointed

Shaun K. Staller, an attorney at Greenberg Traurig, was elected to Equality Forum's board of directors.

A nonprofit organization, Equality Forum is focused on the advancement of national and international lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights with an educational emphasis.

In addition to being a board member for Equality Forum, Staller also serves as a board committee member for FringeAxis, the Young Friends of FringeArts.

Staller is a multilingual attorney who focuses his practice on U.S. immigration matters.
