On Feb. 27, a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives recommended legislation that would allow retired local and state police officers to receive an exemption for any property tax assessed by their local school district in exchange for volunteering 40 hours per week at the school district where they reside.

According to a memo issued by state Rep. Karen Boback, R-Lackawanna, the exemption would be an optional program for retired local and state police officers. Boback said her legislation would require individuals to volunteer 40 hours per week during the academic school year and that the retired officer must maintain training credentials to be eligible for the program.
