A state lawmaker seeks to increase the timeframe from 15 to 30 days for an employer to request relief from charges of a former employee's unemployment benefits.

Pennsylvania Rep. Francis X. Ryan, R-Lebanon, proposed in a memo to lengthen the time an employer can refute being “charged” when a former employee applies for unemployment benefits. If a request is filed after the current 15-day window, the employer can only receive delayed, prospective relief from charges in regard to benefits paid to the worker, said Ryan in his memo.

Ryan furthered that a relief request “can be a complex request to make; this will provide some additional time for employers to contest these charges—which can impact the amount of UC taxes the employer has to pay.”
