- On May 22, the Nationalities Service Center will host “Global Tastes” at WHYY, 150 N. 6th St., Philadelphia. The event will begin with a VIP reception from 6-7 p.m., followed by the event from 7-10 p.m. This gala event raises vital funds that allow immigrants and refugees in the Philadelphia area to continue to benefit from the NSC's high quality legal, social, education, health and language access services. This year, “Global Tastes” will honor Stacy Wyn Sarno, director community engagement and refugee hiring initiatives; WebLinc; and Sozi Pedro Tulante, lecturer-in-law, University of Pennsylvania Law School. https://nscphila.org/global-tastes-2018.
- On Wednesday, May 23, the Philadelphia Bar Association's Young Lawyers Division, as part of the Philadelphia Bar Foundation Board Observer Program, will host a CLE program titled, “Nonprofit Financials 101: What Board Members Need to Know,” from 12:30-1:30 p.m. (lunch and registration begin at noon), at the Philadelphia Bar Association, 11th Floor Conference Center, 1101 Market St., Philadelphia. This practical CLE program will cover how to read nonprofit financial statements, and provide an overview of the audit process and the preparation of required IRS Form 990. - On May 23, Philadelphia Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts (PVLA), in partnership with the Arts and Business Council of Greater Philadelphia (ABC), will host its annual awards ceremony at the Kimmel Center for Performing Arts, 300 S Broad St., Philadelphia. The event will begin with a VIP and general reception/registration from 5:30-7 p.m., followed by an awards presentation from 7-8 p.m., and a networking and dessert reception from 8-9 p.m. This year, PVLA will present its Volunteer of the Year Award to Robert Louis, at Saul Ewing Arnstein & Lehr, for his outstanding dedication and service in providing pro bono legal assistance to PVLA clients. - On May 24 and 31; June 7, 14, 21 and 28; July 12, 19 and 26, the Philadelphia Bar Association's public interest section, law school outreach committee, will host the “2018 Summer Brown Bag Lunch Series,” from noon-1:30 p.m., at the Philadelphia Bar Association. These free programs provide an opportunity for summer law student interns to meet public interest attorneys who are leaders in their field and learn about different types of public interest practice and fellowship opportunities in the greater Philadelphia area. - On May 24, the Philadelphia Chapter of the ACLU-PA will hold its annual meeting, ”Protect the Polls! Voting Rights in the Age of Trump,” featuring the National ACLU's director of voting rights, Dale Ho, from 6:30-8 p.m., at the Moore College of Art and Design, 1916 Race St., Philadelphia. Ho supervises the ACLU's voting rights litigation and advocacy work nationwide. - On May 30, the Public Interest Law Center will host a celebration of their gerrymandering lawsuit victory from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Tango, 39 Morris Avenue, Bryn Mawr. At a reception with law center attorneys, attendees will learn more about their successful challenge to partisan gerrymandering in Pennsylvania, as well as the law center's ongoing fair school funding lawsuit. Tickets include drinks and hors d'oeuvres at Tango, which serves contemporary American cuisine in a comfortable and festive setting. - On June 11, the Philadelphia Bar Foundation will host its 30th annual Golf and Tennis Classic at the Union League Golf Club at Torresdale on 3801 Grant Ave., Philadelphia. Registration and breakfast will begin at 9:30 a.m. (driving range and putting green will be open). The event will also feature tennis/pickleball play, silent and live auctions, a late afternoon golf clinic for novice players and a million dollar shot contest hosted by Barrister Wealth Management. - On June 20, the Philadelphia Bar Association will hold its 2018 June quarterly meeting and luncheon at noon, at The Bellevue Hotel, Broad and Walnut streets, Philadelphia. Kenneth C. Frazier, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Merck & Co., will deliver the Judge A. Leon Higginbotham Jr. Memorial Public Interest Lecture. The court action, filed Nov. 25 in Michigan Eastern District Court by Hooper Hathaway PC on behalf of The Town Residences LLC, accuses Crown Castle of failing to transfer approximately $30,000 in utility payments from T-Mobile in breach of a roof-top lease and assignment agreement.
