New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and about 20 other municipalities from across the country have Philadelphia’s back as it continues to fight with the federal government over its so-called “sanctuary city” policies. Meanwhile, a group of immigration law scholars has also joined the case as amici curiae in support of Philadelphia.
On May 31, 18 cities, three counties and the U.S. Conference of Mayors sought permission to file an amicus brief with the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Noting that they represent more than 24 million people, the brief throws its support behind Philadelphia in its fight against what it claims is the U.S. Department of Justice improperly withholding grant money because of the city’s immigration policies, which the feds argue are less than adequate.
