Here's what's happening in the public interest section of the law in late June and July.

- On June 26, the Philadelphia Lawyers for Social Equity will host an event titled, “Beyond Bars: Conquering the Stigma of Criminal Records” from 5 to 8:30 p.m., at the Friends Center, 1501 Cherry St., Philadelphia. This event will highlight what returning citizens and those with criminal records have to offer when given the opportunity by breaking down the stigma surrounding criminal records. It will also include a pop-up art exhibit featuring artwork by individuals currently and formerly incarcerated, informational tables featuring organizations that provide opportunities to those with criminal records, an address from former juvenile lifer Luis “Suave” Gonzalez, and a panel of our neighbors who continue to succeed in spite of their records.To register, visit, https://bit.ly/2sNyU3v.
- On June 28 and July 12, 19 and 26, the Philadelphia Bar Association's public interest section, Law School Outreach Committee, will continue to host the “2018 Summer Brown Bag Lunch Series,” from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Philadelphia Bar Association, 1101 Market St. These free programs provide an opportunity for summer law student interns to meet public interest attorneys who are leaders in their field and learn about different types of public interest practice and fellowship opportunities in the greater Philadelphia area. - On June 28, the Philadelphia Bar Association's criminal justice section will host a CLE program titled, “The Who, What, Where, When, and Why of Jail Detainers,” from 12:30 to 2:45 p.m. (lunch and registration begins at noon) at the Philadelphia Bar Association, 11th Floor Conference Center, 1101 Market St., Philadelphia. The program will examine the multiple ways a client may be held in custody via a detainer as well as, who should you contact for information, how to get the underlying legal matter listed, how to get the hold lifted and what programs are available for probation and parole detainers. - On July 12, the Philadelphia Bar Association's law school outreach committee and the public interest section will hold the 2018 Philadelphia Summer Public Interest Reception, 5:30 to 7 p.m., at Ballard Spahr, 1735 Market St., 48th Floor, Philadelphia. This event celebrates the exceptional public service of students and lawyers in and around Philadelphia, and provides all with an opportunity to meet and mingle over refreshments and light appetizers. - On July 12, Philadelphia VIP will hold its annual summer pro bono program for law students at PECO Energy Hall, 2301 Market St., Lower Level, Philadelphia, from 8 to 11:30 a.m. The event will provide students with the opportunity to connect with judges and volunteer attorneys over breakfast, and hear about how to incorporate pro bono into their future careers. The program will also include a panel discussion featuring volunteer attorneys who will share practical tips from their experience with pro bono service. - On July 17, Philadelphia VIP will host a nonprofit legal assessment training and clinic at The Free Library, 1901 Vine St., 4th Floor, Philadelphia, from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Volunteer attorneys will participate in a legal assessment clinic for local nonprofits preceded by a one-hour training program. - On July 19, the Support Center for Child Advocates will present “The Children's Docket 2018–Session 4: Adoption Series: Part I-Accelerated Adoption Review Court (AARC).” This training series is specifically designed for Child Advocates volunteer attorneys and is meant to provide more detailed information about the ins and outs of handling a child abuse case and how to prepare for particular hearings. All sessions take place from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m., at the Support Center for Child Advocates, 1617 JFK Blvd, Suite 1200, Philadelphia. - On Aug. 6, the Philadelphia Bar Foundation will hold its 30th Annual Golf & Tennis Classic, at the Union League Golf Club at Torresdale, 3801 Grant Ave., Philadelphia. This event was originally scheduled for June 11 but postponed due to rain. Activities at this event will include pickleball, a million dollar shot contest, a late afternoon golf clinic, and an auction featuring a three-day Lexus Champions for Charity Golf Tournament in Pebble Beach. Who Got The Work
Michael G. Bongiorno, Andrew Scott Dulberg and Elizabeth E. Driscoll from Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr have stepped in to represent Symbotic Inc., an A.I.-enabled technology platform that focuses on increasing supply chain efficiency, and other defendants in a pending shareholder derivative lawsuit. The case, filed Oct. 2 in Massachusetts District Court by the Brown Law Firm on behalf of Stephen Austen, accuses certain officers and directors of misleading investors in regard to Symbotic's potential for margin growth by failing to disclose that the company was not equipped to timely deploy its systems or manage expenses through project delays. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton, is 1:24-cv-12522, Austen v. Cohen et al.

Edmund Polubinski and Marie Killmond of Davis Polk & Wardwell have entered appearances for data platform software development company MongoDB and other defendants in a pending shareholder derivative lawsuit. The action, filed Oct. 7 in New York Southern District Court by the Brown Law Firm, accuses the company's directors and/or officers of falsely expressing confidence in the company’s restructuring of its sales incentive plan and downplaying the severity of decreases in its upfront commitments. The case is 1:24-cv-07594, Roy v. Ittycheria et al.

Amy O. Bruchs and Kurt F. Ellison of Michael Best & Friedrich have entered appearances for Epic Systems Corp. in a pending employment discrimination lawsuit. The suit was filed Sept. 7 in Wisconsin Western District Court by Levine Eisberner LLC and Siri & Glimstad on behalf of a project manager who claims that he was wrongfully terminated after applying for a religious exemption to the defendant's COVID-19 vaccine mandate. The case, assigned to U.S. Magistrate Judge Anita Marie Boor, is 3:24-cv-00630, Secker, Nathan v. Epic Systems Corporation.

David X. Sullivan, Thomas J. Finn and Gregory A. Hall from McCarter & English have entered appearances for Sunrun Installation Services in a pending civil rights lawsuit. The complaint was filed Sept. 4 in Connecticut District Court by attorney Robert M. Berke on behalf of former employee George Edward Steins, who was arrested and charged with employing an unregistered home improvement salesperson. The complaint alleges that had Sunrun informed the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection that the plaintiff's employment had ended in 2017 and that he no longer held Sunrun's home improvement contractor license, he would not have been hit with charges, which were dismissed in May 2024. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Jeffrey A. Meyer, is 3:24-cv-01423, Steins v. Sunrun, Inc. et al.

Greenberg Traurig shareholder Joshua L. Raskin has entered an appearance for boohoo.com UK Ltd. in a pending patent infringement lawsuit. The suit, filed Sept. 3 in Texas Eastern District Court by Rozier Hardt McDonough on behalf of Alto Dynamics, asserts five patents related to an online shopping platform. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Rodney Gilstrap, is 2:24-cv-00719, Alto Dynamics, LLC v. boohoo.com UK Limited.
