In light of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Janus v. AFSCME, a group of Democratic state senators issued a memo stating they plan to present legislation that would streamline the election process for unions and require unions to explain union membership benefits to new employees.

In a 5-4 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down mandatory fees for nonunion members for collective bargaining. The Janus decision overturned a 1977 U.S. Supreme Court decision that held that fair-share fees charged to nonunion members were constitutional.
