Bill Cosby has a new lawyer on his team, who has handled post-conviction matters in a number of high-profile cases, including another ongoing celebrity case.
Peter Goldberger, who has a small firm in Ardmore, focuses his practice on appeals and post-conviction matters. He entered his appearance in Cosby's case as co-counsel in a filing Monday afternoon, to assist lead counsel Joseph P. Green of West Chester.
His clients in Pennsylvania have included former Pennsylvania state Sen. Vincent Fumo; former Bergen County, New Jersey Democratic Committee chairman Joseph Ferriero; and Franklin Brown, the former general counsel of Rite Aid.
He was most recently in the headlines for his work on rapper Meek Mill's post-conviction proceedings. In that case, he worked alongside Philadelphia lawyer Brian McMonagle of McMonagle Perri McHugh Mischak and Davis, who previously represented Cosby in his first criminal trial in 2017, which ended in a mistrial.
Cosby was convicted of three counts of aggravated indecent assault in April for sexually assaulting Andrea Constand at his Cheltenham home in 2004. His sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 24.
After the conviction, Cosby appeared to steer back toward hiring local lawyers. He did away with the legal team that saw him through his retrial, led by California lawyer Tom Mesereau and Nevada lawyer Kathleen Bliss, and also including appellate lawyer Becky James and local counsel Lane Vines.
Cosby had an entirely different team at his first trial, led by McMonagle and California lawyer Angela Agrusa.
When he entered his appearance in the case, Green said in a statement that, “There are complicated legislative and constitutional issues unique to Pennsylvania law that have to be addressed prior to sentencing.”
Green has already filed a motion to bar the application of Pennsylvania's sex offender registration law, arguing that the law is unconstitutional.
Goldberger did not immediately respond to a call seeking comment Tuesday morning.
