The Philadelphia District Attorney has charged a former city police officer for fatally shooting a man twice in the back.

District Attorney Larry Krasner announced Tuesday morning that his office has charged former police officer Ryan Pownall, who is white, with the fatal shooting of David Jones, a black man.

The indictment, according to Krasner, marks the first time in nearly 20 years that a Philadelphia police officer was charged over a fatal shooting.

The charges include criminal homicide, possession of an instrument of crime and recklessly endangering another person in connection. Krasner's announcement came after a county grand jury investigation, which recommended charging Pownall over the fatal June 2017 shooting.
