Philadelphia is considering establishing sites where heroin addicts can inject themselves with the drug under the supervision of health care workers as a prevention tactic for the deadly opioid epidemic, and a state representative said any municipality that approves such policies should not receive any state appropriations.

“While I am in complete support of providing measures to assist those that are addicted, I believe this approach is irresponsible and quite frankly, ridiculous,” said state Rep. Jerry Knowles, R-Berks, in a memo.

“Instead of providing taxpayer dollars to municipalities who enable users, we should use those funds in a more responsible manner rather than foster the continued use of this deadly drug,” Knowles said.
