Chamberlain, Hrdlicka, White, Williams & Aughtry announced that it elevated Kevin F. Sweeney to shareholder.
Based in Philadelphia, Sweeney is a former federal tax prosecutor with the U.S. Department of Justice tax division in Washington, D.C. He counsels clients involved in civil and criminal tax controversy and litigation matters.
Sweeney joined Chamberlain Hrdlicka in 2016, and his appointment to shareholder was announced at the firm's annual retreat in Houston last month. He is one of nine elevated and new shareholders within the firm.
During his tenure with the DOJ's tax division, Sweeney was among a team assigned to the DOJ's Swiss Bank Program, leading enforcement cases involving international tax matters. At the time of joining Chamberlain Hrdlicka, Sweeney was the first former SBP attorney to enter private practice.
He counsels financial institutions, asset managers, professional services firms and executives on U.S. and regulatory and tax enforcement issues.
He also regularly represents U.S. citizens and residents with undeclared offshore bank accounts in criminal investigations, prosecutions, audits, voluntary disclosures and streamline filings.
In the tax controversy area, Sweeney advises clients on matters related to cryptocurrency, security tokens, captive insurance, offshore bank accounts and other complex foreign tax matters.
He is also a white-collar criminal defense attorney, handling cases related to tax evasion, false tax returns, FBAR violations, money laundering and the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, among other areas.
Sweeney is a former special assistant U.S. attorney in the Districts of Colorado and the Eastern District of Virginia and a former prosecutor and appellate attorney in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's Corps.
He was deployed to Baghdad in 2006, where he advised commanders on criminal law issues and internal investigations into serious combat-related incidents.

The Philadelphia Bar Association's LegalLine is set to offer free legal advice to residents of Philadelphia and the surrounding counties from 5 to 8 p.m. April 17.
Members of the public can access LegalLine by calling (215) 238-6333.
Area residents seeking confidential legal advice will be able to speak for free with a volunteer attorney from the Philadelphia Bar Association.
Free legal advice will be available on family law, landlord-tenant, workers' compensation, employment law and more.
In addition, the Philadelphia Bar Association's Lawyer Referral and Information Service is available 9-5p.m. Monday through Friday., at the above phone number, to provide lawyer referrals to area residents.
Staff attorneys take calls from the public and refer callers to attorneys in private practice for a 30-minute consultation, for which the attorney charges a fee of $35.
If callers do not need an attorney or cannot afford one, they will be directed to a legal service organization, agency or other resource for assistance.
LegalLine is a public service sponsored by the Philadelphia Bar Association young lawyers division, providing residents with free, quick and accurate legal advice during convenient evening hours. LegalLine is offered typically from 5 to 8 p.m. on the third Wednesday of every month.
The program has existed for over 20 years, allowing volunteer attorneys to help thousands of callers through direct service or by referring them to an appropriate resource.

Saxton & Stump announced the hiring of Richard J. Hansberry as a paralegal.
Hansberry will support the firm's intellectual property law and business and corporate law groups.
Hansberry worked at law firms in Pennsylvania in both Lancaster and York for more than 25 years.
He assists attorneys in all aspects of legal entity organizational compliance, including formation, conversion and dissolution.
On the intellectual property side, Hansberry has experience with drafting and filing copyright, trademark and patent applications and related documents and correspondence.
He also has experience in business and professional mergers and acquisitions and asset purchases and sales, particularly in connection with employment and shareholder agreements as well as confidentiality, non-compete and licensing agreements at a state and national level.

The action, filed Oct. 7 in New York Southern District Court by the Brown Law Firm, accuses the company's directors and/or officers of falsely expressing confidence in the company’s restructuring of its sales incentive plan and downplaying the severity of decreases in its upfront commitments. The case is 1:24-cv-07594, Roy v. Ittycheria et al.

The suit was filed Sept. 7 in Wisconsin Western District Court by Levine Eisberner LLC and Siri & Glimstad on behalf of a project manager who claims that he was wrongfully terminated after applying for a religious exemption to the defendant's COVID-19 vaccine mandate. David X. Sullivan, Thomas J. Finn and Gregory A. Hall from McCarter & English have entered appearances for Sunrun Installation Services in a pending civil rights lawsuit. The complaint was filed Sept. 4 in Connecticut District Court by attorney Robert M. Berke on behalf of former employee George Edward Steins, who was arrested and charged with employing an unregistered home improvement salesperson. The complaint alleges that had Sunrun informed the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection that the plaintiff's employment had ended in 2017 and that he no longer held Sunrun's home improvement contractor license, he would not have been hit with charges, which were dismissed in May 2024.
