Neil Hurowitz, special counsel to Astor Weiss Kaplan & Mandel, died May 31 at age 85.

Hurowitz practiced family law at Astor Weiss and was a fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Law and the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, according to Astor Weiss' website. He handled matters related to spousal/trial support, divorce cases and financial issues, custody, grandparent and parent visitation rights, and spousal support and alimony.

He authored several books on family law throughout his career, including “Divorce: Your Fault, My Fault, No Fault,” which he wrote for a general audience. He also wrote many articles, spoke at seminars and lectures, and on several occasions appeared on radio and television shows to discuss his work.

Hurowitz had numerous leadership positions within legal organizations throughout his career. He served as president of the Montgomery County Trial Lawyers Association and president of the Pennsylvania chapter of the AAML. He also served as chair in the professionalism committees of both the Pennsylvania chapter of the AAML and the Montgomery County Bar Association.

In July 2013, Hurowitz received the Eric Turner Memorial Award from the family law section of the Pennsylvania Bar Association for his practice in the field of family law and his work educating fellow lawyers.

Before practicing family law, Hurowitz tried cases involving criminal defense, corporate disputes, medical malpractice, computers, negligence and unusual civil defense suits.

He earned his Juris Doctor at Penn State Dickinson Law.

Hurowitz's family held a small private service in his honor the weekend following his death.
