The Pennsylvania Bar Association workers' compensation law section is set to present its Irvin Stander Memorial Award to Barbara E. Holmes, a partner at Blaufeld Schiller & Holmes in Pittsburgh, during its annual fall meeting Sept. 26-27 at the Hershey Lodge in Hershey.
The award is named in honor of the late Judge Irvin Stander and is presented to an attorney who demonstrates professionalism and dedication to the administration of workers' compensation law.
Holmes focuses her practice on representing injured workers in workers' compensation claims and disability applicants in Social Security claims. Prior to joining Blaufeld Schiller, she spent six years practicing general litigation.
Holmes writes and presents on workers' compensation topics for numerous Pennsylvania Bar Institute resources and programs and served as an instructor for the Workers' Compensation Practicum at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law.
Holmes is a member of the American, Pennsylvania and Allegheny County bar associations. She is a former chair of the PBA workers' compensation law section and a past president of the Allegheny County Bar Association workers' compensation section.

Pamela Walz, a supervising attorney for Community Legal Services of Philadelphia's aging and disabilities unit, received the Excellence in Elder Law Award from the Pennsylvania Bar Association elder law section during the Elder Law Institute.
The award recognizes an individual who has made contributions in the field of elder law and the elder law bar and provided service to the elderly.
At Community Legal Services, Walz represents low-income older adults and younger adults with disabilities in matters involving access to publicly funded long-term care services and supports issues concerning nursing facilities and personal care homes, public benefits and guardianship.
As a member of the Coalition for Personal Care Home Reform, Walz works to achieve stronger licensing standards and more effective licensing enforcement for personal care homes.
She also serves a consumer advocate on the long-term care subcommittee of the Department of Human Services medical assistance advisory committee, as well as a member of the mental health advisory committee of the Disability Rights Network and the Pennsylvania Supreme Court's advisory council on elder justice in the courts.

Meyer, Unkovic & Scott added two new associates—Katelin J. Montgomery and Kate E. McCarthy—as members of the firm's litigation and dispute resolution practice group.
Montgomery focuses her practice on commercial and employment disputes. She practices in both state and federal court in Pennsylvania, including the appellate courts, and has experience defending clients in various tort and personal injury actions.
McCarthy previously worked as a law clerk to Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice David Wecht, judicial intern to Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Christine Donohue, and prosecutorial intern for the Allegheny County District Attorney's Office.

The case, filed Oct. 2 in Massachusetts District Court by the Brown Law Firm on behalf of Stephen Austen, accuses certain officers and directors of misleading investors in regard to Symbotic's potential for margin growth by failing to disclose that the company was not equipped to timely deploy its systems or manage expenses through project delays. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton, is 1:24-cv-12522, Austen v. Cohen et al.

Edmund Polubinski and Marie Killmond of Davis Polk & Wardwell have entered appearances for data platform software development company MongoDB and other defendants in a pending shareholder derivative lawsuit. The action, filed Oct. 7 in New York Southern District Court by the Brown Law Firm, accuses the company's directors and/or officers of falsely expressing confidence in the company’s restructuring of its sales incentive plan and downplaying the severity of decreases in its upfront commitments. The complaint was filed Sept. 4 in Connecticut District Court by attorney Robert M. Berke on behalf of former employee George Edward Steins, who was arrested and charged with employing an unregistered home improvement salesperson. The complaint alleges that had Sunrun informed the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection that the plaintiff's employment had ended in 2017 and that he no longer held Sunrun's home improvement contractor license, he would not have been hit with charges, which were dismissed in May 2024.
