Harris J. Chernow, chair of Reger Rizzo & Darnall's national franchise and distribution practice group, is set to join a panel of legal professionals to present "Fundamentals of Franchising" on Oct. 16 in Denver.
The presentation is part of the American Bar Association's 42nd annual Forum on Franchising, a convention featuring educational and continuing legal education programming for members of the franchise industry.
The program will provide a comprehensive overview of franchise law for those who want an introduction to this field, as well as those who want a refresher on one or more areas of franchise law practice.
Chernow, along with his fellow presenters, will discuss the intellectual property aspects of franchising, structuring a franchise, disclosure and registration requirements, defining and protecting a franchise system's intellectual property, franchise relationship laws, international franchising, and the representation of franchisees.
Chernow will be joined by Corby C. Anderson of Bradley Arant Boult Cummings; Andraya Frith of Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt; and Rochelle Spandorf of Davis Wright Tremaine.

The Center for Ethics and the Rule of Law at the University of Pennsylvania Law School is set to host a CLE program—a book talk with David McCraw, deputy general counsel at The New York Times and author of "Truth in Our Times: Inside the Fight for Press Freedom in the Age of Alternative Facts."
McCraw will discuss the challenges and dangers that today's media companies and journalists face, including those posed by the Trump administration.
The program is scheduled to be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Sept. 17 at the University of Pennsylvania Law School.
A reception is set to follow, and the event is free.

Stradley Ronon Stevens & Young attorney Ashley E. Shapiro served as a panelist on "The Balancing of Perspectives in a Changing Title IX Landscape: Institutions, Complainants, and Respondents" presented at the Montgomery Bar Association by the education law and criminal defense committees.
The panel discussed Title IX in the academic setting from the perspective of the school, the complainant and the respondent/accused.
It provided an overview of the role of Title IX in education and what universities are expected to do to prevent and respond to reported incidents of sexual assault, as well as a broad overview of the students' due process rights.
Shapiro concentrates her litigation practice in the areas of white-collar criminal defense, internal investigations and corporate compliance matters.
She represents clients in New Jersey and Pennsylvania state and federal criminal proceedings.
Shapiro also has experience representing individuals in administrative proceedings, such as
Title IX investigations and the collegiate student conduct process.

Duquesne University School of Law student Marvi Wahla is the recipient of the 2019 Burns White Diversity in the Law Scholarship, awarded to a first-year, diverse student at the university's school of law.
Wahla, a graduate of George Mason University, was selected from a pool of applicants.
The annual Burns White Diversity in the Law Scholarship is awarded to a candidate who adds diversity to the incoming class, and includes a paid summer clerkship at the firm following the successful completion of the recipient's second year of law school.
In addition, a mentor from Burns White will work with Wahla for the duration of her legal education.

The case, filed Oct. 2 in Massachusetts District Court by the Brown Law Firm on behalf of Stephen Austen, accuses certain officers and directors of misleading investors in regard to Symbotic's potential for margin growth by failing to disclose that the company was not equipped to timely deploy its systems or manage expenses through project delays. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton, is 1:24-cv-12522, Austen v. Cohen et al.

Edmund Polubinski and Marie Killmond of Davis Polk & Wardwell have entered appearances for data platform software development company MongoDB and other defendants in a pending shareholder derivative lawsuit. The action, filed Oct. 7 in New York Southern District Court by the Brown Law Firm, accuses the company's directors and/or officers of falsely expressing confidence in the company’s restructuring of its sales incentive plan and downplaying the severity of decreases in its upfront commitments. The case is 1:24-cv-07594, Roy v. Ittycheria et al.

The suit was filed Sept. 7 in Wisconsin Western District Court by Levine Eisberner LLC and Siri & Glimstad on behalf of a project manager who claims that he was wrongfully terminated after applying for a religious exemption to the defendant's COVID-19 vaccine mandate. The case, assigned to U.S. Magistrate Judge Anita Marie Boor, is 3:24-cv-00630, Secker, Nathan v. Epic Systems Corporation.

David X. Sullivan, Thomas J. Finn and Gregory A. Hall from McCarter & English have entered appearances for Sunrun Installation Services in a pending civil rights lawsuit. The complaint was filed Sept. 4 in Connecticut District Court by attorney Robert M. Berke on behalf of former employee George Edward Steins, who was arrested and charged with employing an unregistered home improvement salesperson. The complaint alleges that had Sunrun informed the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection that the plaintiff's employment had ended in 2017 and that he no longer held Sunrun's home improvement contractor license, he would not have been hit with charges, which were dismissed in May 2024. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Jeffrey A. Meyer, is 3:24-cv-01423, Steins v. Sunrun, Inc. et al.
