Joan C. Arnold, a partner with Pepper Hamilton and chair of the firm's tax and private client practice group, began her term as chair elect of the American Bar Association's section of taxation.
Arnold will serve as chair elect until August 2020, at which point she will assume the role of chair.
The ABA tax section is the largest association of tax practitioners in the United States, with more than 11,000 members.
Prior to being named chair elect, Arnold held various leadership positions in the organization.
Arnold focuses her practice on federal and international income tax, and she has more than 40 years of experience in domestic and cross-border mergers and acquisitions and corporate international tax counseling, including substantial tax experience in the private equity arena.
She served as president of the American College of Tax Counsel from 2015 to 2016.
She is also a member of the executive committee of the USA branch of the International Fiscal Association and a member of the advisory committee for the George Washington/IRS International Tax Institute.
Before entering private practice, Arnold was vice president, associate general tax counsel for Citicorp, a full-time faculty member at Rutgers Law School, and a consultant in international tax to KPMG Peat Marwick in its national office.
She received her Juris Doctor from Villanova University Charles Widger School of Law.

R. Nicholas Nanovic, partner with Gross McGinley, was appointed by the Pennsylvania Bar Association to serve as the coordinator of the Lehigh and Northampton County Wills for Heroes Program.
Nanovic is a long-standing volunteer with the program that offers free basic estate planning documents to first responders and military veterans.
Co-sponsored by the PBA's young lawyers division, Wills for Heroes provides police, fire, emergency medical personnel, other first responders and military veterans with the tools they need to prepare for the future.
County events are scheduled throughout the year, staffed by volunteer attorneys and held at local meeting halls, fire stations and bar associations.
Nanovic serves as chair of Gross McGinley's wills, trusts and estates group.
He has over 10 years of experience advising individuals and business owners on their estate planning and tax needs.
He attained the designation of an accredited estate planner, awarded by the National Association of Estate Planners & Councils.
Nanovic partners with his clients to design customized estate plans for individuals and business owners as well as navigating complex tax matters.
He earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Miami School of Law.
Announcements
The statewide loan repayment assistance program began its 10th year of helping attorneys employed at civil legal services organizations funded by Pennsylvania Interest on Lawyers Trust Accounts better manage their undergraduate and law school debt.
Attorneys employed at these organizations provide free legal assistance to Pennsylvania's poor and disadvantaged.
Eligible attorneys will have until Oct. 15 to submit their online applications for loan assistance at www.paioltagrants.org.
The Pennsylvania Bar Foundation—PA IOLTA Loan Repayment Assistance program awards 919 loans valued at more than $3.3 million to 284 attorneys employed by 36 different IOLTA-funded civil legal services organizations located across Pennsylvania.
LRAP is administered by the Pennsylvania Bar Foundation and the Pennsylvania PA IOLTA board.
It is a collaboration of the Pennsylvania Bar Foundation, the Pennsylvania Bar Association, the PA IOLTA board and the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania.

The suit, filed Dec. 11 in New York Southern District Court by Bleichmar Fonti & Auld, accuses the defendants of concealing the bank's 'pervasive' deficiencies in regards to its compliance with the Bank Secrecy Act and the quality of its anti-money laundering controls. The court action, filed Nov. 25 in Michigan Eastern District Court by Hooper Hathaway PC on behalf of The Town Residences LLC, accuses Crown Castle of failing to transfer approximately $30,000 in utility payments from T-Mobile in breach of a roof-top lease and assignment agreement.
