Thomas A. Brophy, president emeritus at Marshall Dennehey Warner Coleman & Goggin, was awarded the 2019 William J. O'Brien Distinguished Service Award from the Philadelphia Association of Defense Counsel.
The award is given annually to a PADC member who demonstrates legal service and contributions to the PADC and the greater legal community.
The award comes with a $1,000 stipend to be given to a charity of the recipient's choosing. Brophy chose the Philadelphia Bar Foundation, of which he is a current trustee and past president, to receive the donation.

Ralph R. Smith III of Capehart Scatchard is set to present "Ethics for Employment Lawyers 2019" from noon to 1:40 p.m. Oct. 10.
Smith will discuss various ethical challenges in different areas of law with a focus on labor and employment law.
Other topics in ethics presented will include conflicts, ex parte contacts, joint representation and confidentiality issues.
The program will be held at Capehart Scatchard in Mount Laurel, New Jersey. It is approved for 2.0 New Jersey ethics credits and 1.5 Pennsylvania ethics credits. Seating is limited, and pre-registration is required.

Cozen O'Connor announced the promotion of two members to shareholders of the firm in Philadelphia: Joseph C. Bedwick and George A. Voegele Jr.
Bedwick concentrates his practice in general business and corporate law, with an emphasis on mergers and acquisitions.
He is co-chair of the firm's cannabis industry team, where he spearheaded the development of a multidisciplinary cannabis practice into a full-service industry team.
He helps clients navigate the industry, including in utilizing his mergers and acquisitions experience to structure and document acquisitions of cannabis license holders.
Voegele advises employers in labor and employment matters, with a focus on traditional labor matters such as collective bargaining and union-management relations, employment litigation, and wage-and-hour advice and litigation in both the public and private sectors.
Voegele represents businesses, municipalities, nonprofits and educational institutions in all aspects of labor and employment law, including federal and state court trial proceedings involving equal employment opportunity laws, such as Title VII, the Americans With Disabilities Act, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act, the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act, and the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination.

McNees Wallace & Nurick announced the addition of Triston "Chase" O'Savio to the firm's labor and employment practice group.
Chase previously served as a federal judicial law clerk to U.S. District Judge James M. Munley of the Middle District of Pennsylvania.
While earning his law degree from Penn State Dickinson Law, he served as president of the moot court board and founded Dickinson Law's O'Savio Moot Court Competition, which is now an annual event.
He competed on the national trial team, where he was inducted into The Order of Barristers and was awarded the Joseph T. McDonald Scholarship.

The case, filed Oct. 2 in Massachusetts District Court by the Brown Law Firm on behalf of Stephen Austen, accuses certain officers and directors of misleading investors in regard to Symbotic's potential for margin growth by failing to disclose that the company was not equipped to timely deploy its systems or manage expenses through project delays. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton, is 1:24-cv-12522, Austen v. Cohen et al.

The action, filed Oct. 7 in New York Southern District Court by the Brown Law Firm, accuses the company's directors and/or officers of falsely expressing confidence in the company’s restructuring of its sales incentive plan and downplaying the severity of decreases in its upfront commitments. The complaint was filed Sept. 4 in Connecticut District Court by attorney Robert M. Berke on behalf of former employee George Edward Steins, who was arrested and charged with employing an unregistered home improvement salesperson. The complaint alleges that had Sunrun informed the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection that the plaintiff's employment had ended in 2017 and that he no longer held Sunrun's home improvement contractor license, he would not have been hit with charges, which were dismissed in May 2024. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Jeffrey A. Meyer, is 3:24-cv-01423, Steins v. Sunrun, Inc. et al.
