2019 National Pro Bono Celebration Events in Philadelphia (Oct. 21-25):
- From Oct. 21 through Oct. 25, the Philadelphia Bar Foundation will hold a citywide "Philly Jeans for Justice" campaign to celebrate Pro Bono Week. Participating law firms, legal departments and businesses in the Philadelphia will pick a day and collect $5 (or more) from each participant wearing denim or another pre-determined office theme. - On Oct. 21, the SeniorLAW Center will hold a volunteer attorney training session, "Assisting Seniors Through the Pennsylvania SeniorLAW HelpLine," from noon to 2 p.m., at Morgan Lewis & Bockius, 1701 Market St., Philadelphia. Volunteers will be trained to provide legal advice, information and referrals to seniors across Pennsylvania who call the Pennsylvania SeniorLAW HelpLine with civil legal issues. - On Oct. 22, Consumer Bankruptcy Assistance Project (CBAP) will hold a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy Pro Bono Volunteer Training Program, from 9 a.m. to noon, at Fox Rothschild, 2000 Market St., 20th Floor, Philadelphia. The training will cover the fundamentals of completing a Chapter 7 bankruptcy petition for a low-income client. To register for the training program, contact Sherry Hoban at [email protected].
- On Oct. 23, the Support Center for Child Advocates will hold a volunteer training workshop, "How to Handle a Child Abuse Case," from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the Philadelphia Bar Association, 1101 Market St., 11th Floor Conference Center, Philadelphia. Learn from dedicated experts in the field of child advocacy about how you can make a difference in the lives of child victims. This program offers 6.5 CLE credits (4.5 SUB/2 ETH). - On Oct. 23, Philadelphia VIP will hold a LawWorks Small Business Clinic, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., at Greenberg Traurig, 1717 Arch St., Suite 400, Philadelphia. This pro bono opportunity allows volunteers to support the entrepreneurs who are the backbone of community economic development. Volunteers will be paired with a small business client to provide day-of legal advice on transactional matters, such as contracts, choice of entity, employment practices and intellectual property. - On Oct. 24, the First Judicial District (FJD) 2019 Pro Bono Awards Ceremony and Roll of Honor reception (by invitation only) will take place, from 4 to 6 p.m., at City Hall, Room 654, Philadelphia. Attorneys who performed pro bono services in the FJD courts from Sept. 22, 2018 to Sept. 26, 2019, are eligible for the Roll of Honor and will be honored at the event. - On Oct. 25, the Philadelphia Bar Foundation's Board Observer Program will present a CLE Luncheon Program, "Nuts & Bolts of Nonprofit Board Service," at the Philadelphia Bar Association, 1101 Market St., 11th Floor Conference Center, Philadelphia. The CLE will provide attorneys interested in serving on a nonprofit board with an introduction to the role of a seat on a board of directors and the laws governing nonprofits, including charitable issues raised under state and federal laws. - On Oct. 23, the ACLU of Pennsylvania and The Barristers' Association of Philadelphia, Inc. are hosting a free panel discussion on reforming probation in Pennsylvania at Uncle Bobbie's Coffee & Books, from 6:15 to 8:30 pm., at 5445 Germantown Ave., Philadelphia. - On Oct. 24, Pennsylvanians for Modern Courts (PMC) will host its 4th Annual Judicial Independence Benefit, from 6 to 8:30 p.m., at the Masonic Temple, 1 N. Broad St., Philadelphia. Carl Hulse, chief Washington correspondent for the New York Times and a recognized authority on congressional affairs and national politics, will be the event's keynote speaker. PMC will also present the Judge Edmund B. Spaeth Jr. Award to an individual who embodies PMC's mission. https://www.pmconline.org/events.html.
- On Oct. 24, Rutgers Law School in Camden will hold its 34th annual Mary Philbrook Public Interest Awards Celebration, from 6 to 9 p.m., at Rutgers University–Camden Campus Center, 326 Penn St., Camden, New Jersey. The celebration will honor Lloyd Freeman, partner and chief diversity officer at Archer Law. Tickets are $35 (buffet and drinks). - On Oct. 30, the Pennsylvania Innocence Project will celebrate their 10th anniversary celebration fighting for justice for wrongly convicted men and women incarcerated in Pennsylvania, from 6 to 10 p.m., at the National Constitution Center, 525 Arch St., Philadelphia. Dr. Yusuf Salaam, one of the "Central Park Five" teens, now known as "The Exonerated Five," who were wrongly convicted and later exonerated in a highly publicized rape in New York City's Central Park, will be the featured guest. - On Nov. 6, the Philadelphia Bar Foundation will celebrate their supporters and honor 2019 award winners at its Access to Justice celebration and reception at the Crystal Tea Room, 100 Penn Square East, Philadelphia, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Hausfeld is the recipient of the 2019 Pro Bono Award in honor of their commitment to the development and delivery of pro bono legal services in Philadelphia and to access to justice in our community. Linda Peyton, executive director of Legal Clinic for the Disabled, is the recipient of the 2019 Philadelphia Bar Foundation Award. More information is available at www.PhilaBarFoundation.org.
- On Nov. 7, the Public Interest Law Center will host a Celebration of the Right to Vote at 7303 Emlen St., Philadelphia. Law Center board member Howard Langer will host advocates for democracy at a cocktail party celebrating the Law Center's long and storied history of defending and strengthening the right to vote, helping commemorate the Law Center's 50th anniversary. - On Nov. 22, the Women's Law Project will hold its annual party at The Ballroom at the Ben, 834 Chestnut St., Philadelphia, from 5:30–8:30 p.m. Guests will enjoy hors d'oeuvres, wine and beer, and the evening will feature a silent auction. Michael G. Bongiorno, Andrew Scott Dulberg and Elizabeth E. Driscoll from Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr have stepped in to represent Symbotic Inc., an A.I.-enabled technology platform that focuses on increasing supply chain efficiency, and other defendants in a pending shareholder derivative lawsuit. The case, filed Oct. 2 in Massachusetts District Court by the Brown Law Firm on behalf of Stephen Austen, accuses certain officers and directors of misleading investors in regard to Symbotic's potential for margin growth by failing to disclose that the company was not equipped to timely deploy its systems or manage expenses through project delays. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton, is 1:24-cv-12522, Austen v. Cohen et al.

Edmund Polubinski and Marie Killmond of Davis Polk & Wardwell have entered appearances for data platform software development company MongoDB and other defendants in a pending shareholder derivative lawsuit. The action, filed Oct. 7 in New York Southern District Court by the Brown Law Firm, accuses the company's directors and/or officers of falsely expressing confidence in the company’s restructuring of its sales incentive plan and downplaying the severity of decreases in its upfront commitments. The case is 1:24-cv-07594, Roy v. Ittycheria et al.

Amy O. Bruchs and Kurt F. Ellison of Michael Best & Friedrich have entered appearances for Epic Systems Corp. in a pending employment discrimination lawsuit. The suit was filed Sept. 7 in Wisconsin Western District Court by Levine Eisberner LLC and Siri & Glimstad on behalf of a project manager who claims that he was wrongfully terminated after applying for a religious exemption to the defendant's COVID-19 vaccine mandate. The case, assigned to U.S. Magistrate Judge Anita Marie Boor, is 3:24-cv-00630, Secker, Nathan v. Epic Systems Corporation.

David X. Sullivan, Thomas J. Finn and Gregory A. Hall from McCarter & English have entered appearances for Sunrun Installation Services in a pending civil rights lawsuit. The complaint was filed Sept. 4 in Connecticut District Court by attorney Robert M. Berke on behalf of former employee George Edward Steins, who was arrested and charged with employing an unregistered home improvement salesperson. The complaint alleges that had Sunrun informed the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection that the plaintiff's employment had ended in 2017 and that he no longer held Sunrun's home improvement contractor license, he would not have been hit with charges, which were dismissed in May 2024. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Jeffrey A. Meyer, is 3:24-cv-01423, Steins v. Sunrun, Inc. et al.
