Lamb McErlane attorney Steve E. Jarmon was elected to the board of St. Augustine Academy.

SAA, located in Norristown, is an independent, tuition-free, out-of-school program for girls in grades one through four.

The mission of SAA is to build character, instill a positive sense of self, and provide tangible life skills.

At Lamb McErlane Jarmon is a partner with a focus on criminal and civil matters. Jarmon serves as a member of the Pennsylvania Association of Criminal Defense Lawyer's probation and parole reform task force.

He is active in the community, serving as a committee person for the Phoenixville Democratic Committee and on the Phoenixville Human Relations Committee.

Events

The panel presentation "How Technology Advances Autocracy and What Democracies Can Do About It" is set to be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Nov. 21 in the Fitts Auditorium at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School.

This panel will focus on how new and developing technologies are strengthening autocracies and what the United States and other democracies can do to thwart their infiltration and effectiveness, primarily through civic engagement and education, media response and private sector technology collaboration.

Participants include:

  • David D. Cole, the national legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union. Before joining the ACLU in July 2016, he was the Hon. George J. Mitchell professor in law and public policy at the Georgetown University Law Center from March 2014 through December 2016.
  • Richard Fontaine, the chief executive officer of the Center for a New American Security. Prior to joining CNAS, he worked at the State Department and the National Security Council and on the staff of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
  • Kara Frederick, a fellow for the Technology and National Security Program at the Center for a New American Security. Prior to joining CNAS, Kara helped create and lead Facebook's Global Security Counterterrorism Analysis Program.
  • Marwan M. Kraidy, a professor of communication; the Anthony Shadid chair in global media, politics and culture; and the founding director of the Center for Advanced Research in Global Communication at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania.
  • Moderator Claire Finkelstein, the Algernon Biddle professor of law and professor of philosophy at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School and CERL's faculty director.

Attendees will receive two Pennsylvania ethics CLE credits.

A reception will follow immediately after the program.

Drinker Biddle & Reath's Philadelphia office and its diversity and inclusion committee hosted a diversity and inclusion CLE event, which included presentations on the Telephone Consumer Protection Act; environmental, social and governance; and corporate diversity and inclusion.

Philadelphia associate Emmanuel Brown introduced each panel.

Washington, D.C., partner Laura Phillips, New York counsel Marsha Indych and Philadelphia associate John Yi spoke on a panel on "Making the Right Call: Navigating the TCPA's Regulation and Litigations."

Philadelphia partners Beth Diffley and Mona Ghude spoke on a panel, which included Cassandre Juste of The Vanguard Group Inc. and Lisa Whittaker of Global X ETFs, on "The Changing Landscape of Corporate Purpose and ESG's Continued Impact."

The panel was moderated by Philadelphia associates Roni Mathew and Stephanie Marcozzi.

Chief diversity officer Maria Lewis led the last discussion on "How to Have the Difficult Conversations to Advance a Diverse & Inclusive Work Environment."
