  • On Jan. 20, HIAS Pennsylvania will host a day of service and advocacy events for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Service activities in the form of beautification efforts will take place at Spruance Elementary School, from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m., and Tarken Recreation Center in the Northeast, from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. An advocacy event will also be held at the HIAS Pennsylvania office at 2100 Arch St., from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Refreshments will be served.   • On Jan. 22, the Philadelphia Bar Association's environmental and energy law committee will host a CLE program titled, "Regional Water Challenges in the Next 30 Years," from 12:30–1:30 p.m. (lunch and registration begin at noon), at the Philadelphia Bar Association, 11th Floor Conference Center. Materials will be provided electronically prior to the program. 1.0 SUB CLE credits are available. While development and population rise, the region remains anchored by the poorest large city in America. The region thus faces complex, long-term challenges in remaining a world leader in protecting and providing access to this critical resource. This interactive CLE presentation by The Water Center at the University of Pennsylvania will address the current "state of the waters" in the region and discuss how best to frame and prioritize the threats and opportunities facing the region in the long-term.   • On Jan. 30, Philadelphia VIP will host a free volunteer training program, "Serving your Divorce Complaint," from noon–1 p.m., at Philadelphia VIP, 1500 Walnut St., Suite 400. This free information session will provide helpful tips on how to properly serve a hard-to-find defendant in a VIP divorce case and more.   • On Jan. 30, the Philadelphia Bar Association will host a CLE program titled "Counseling the Client Regarding Form I-9 Compliance and Discrimination," from 12:30-3 p.m. (lunch and registration begin at noon), at the Philadelphia Bar Association, 11th Floor Conference Center. Materials will be provided electronically prior to the program. 2.5 SUB CLE credits are available. Form I-9, employment eligibility verification (Form I-9) is used to document identity and work authorization of persons employed in the United States. Every employer is required to correctly execute them within three days of an employee beginning to work for pay but many organizations find the process challenging. A solid understanding of how to assess and rectify Form I-9 compliance issues, while avoiding discrimination claims, is important to attorneys who represent employers and employees. This practical program is designed to equip attorneys with a basic understanding of the processes, liabilities and context of the various enforcement mechanisms they will likely encounter if a client runs afoul of the law.   • On Feb. 1, the Philadelphia Bar Association's LGBT rights committee will host a CLE program titled "Legal Name Change in Philadelphia," from 10 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., (registration begins at 9:30 a.m.), at the Community College of Philadelphia, Center for Business and Industry, 1751 Callowhill St., Philadelphia. Materials will be provided electronically prior to the program. 1.0 SUB/1.0 ETH CLE credits are available. This CLE is geared toward attorneys interested in providing pro bono representation to low-income residents of Philadelphia who are seeking a legal name change relating to gender identity. This program is free of charge only to attorneys who commit to volunteer at a name-change clinic that is being offered later at 1 p.m., at the Community College of Philadelphia.  Attorneys interested in volunteering for the clinic should register for the CLE as a volunteer and then contact Ian Evans at [email protected] or Andrew Slom at [email protected], and copy Tara Phoenix at [email protected].   • On Feb. 6, Philadelphia VIP will host a free volunteer training program titled "Nuts & Bolts of Representing a Tenant in Municipal Court," from 8:30-11a.m., at Stradley Ronon Stevens & Young, 2005 Market St., #2600. Attendees will gain an overview of landlord-tenant law and practical information for representing a client in a landlord-tenant dispute in the Philadelphia courts.   • On Feb. 14, Philadelphia VIP will host a nonprofit legal assessment clinic and training, from 9:30 a.m.-12 p.m., at Parkway Central Library, 1901 Vine Street, 4th Floor. Nonprofits frequently confront legal issues that impact their ability to be successful, and often lack the financial resources to hire an attorney. Participating attorneys will attend a free training on nonprofit law and help local nonprofits identify and troubleshoot key legal issues.
