Elected and Appointed

Willig, Williams & Davidson announced that partner Aneesah El-Amin-Jaamia was elected to serve as secretary of the Philadelphia Bar Association's family law section for the 2020 term.

This role is the first step in a succession of officer roles that is expected to see El-Amin-Jaamia serving as chair of the section in four years; she will serve as secretary this year, treasurer the following year, and chair-elect the year after that, culminating her service by serving as chair of the section in 2023.

El-Amin-Jaamia focuses her practice on family law.

A partner with the legal services practice group at Willig Williams, she guides clients through divorce, support, custody, equitable distribution of property, adoptions and domestic violence matters.

In addition to the Philadelphia Bar Association, El-Amin-Jaamia also is a member of the Nicholas J. Cipriani Family Law American Inn of Court, which was founded to promote professionalism, ethics, camaraderie and education among the bench and bar.

She holds a law degree from the Temple University Beasley School of Law.

Barley Snyder announced that partner David Freedman was named the president-elect of the Lancaster Bar Association board of directors.

Freedman will serve as president-elect in 2020, then move to the president of the board in 2021.

Freedman was the association's vice president twice, in 2015 and 2019.

The association has over 700 members, who are attorneys, judges and law students.

Freedman is a member of the Barley Snyder employment practice group, as well as the employment litigation, immigration and education groups.

He also is part of the firm's hospitality and food and agribusiness industry groups.

Speakers

Steven L. Sugarman, founding principal of Steven L. Sugarman & Associates, was a featured speaker at the Pennsylvania Bar Institute's 23rd Real Estate Institute held in Philadelphia.

Sugarman spoke on the topic, "Annual Condo/HOA Case Law and Legislative Update."

Sugarman also presented at the Pennsylvania Bar Association's Midyear Meeting held in Nassau, The Bahamas.

His program was titled, "Buying and Living in an Age Restricted Community in Pennsylvania."

A member of the College of Community Association Lawyers, Sugarman also serves as an adjunct professor at Villanova University Charles Widger School of Law, where he developed and teaches the course, "Condominium and Homeowner Association Law."

He is a graduate of the Temple University Beasley School of Law.

Events

The Eleanor H. McCullen Center for Law, Religion and Public Policy and the Villanova Political Theology Project are set to present the program "Religious Freedom: A Global Conversation" from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Feb. 10 at the Villanova University Charles Widger School of Law.

The speakers are Michael D. McNally, author of "Defend the Sacred: Native American Religious Freedom beyond the First Amendment"; Emilia Justyna Powell, author of "Islamic Law and International Law: Peaceful Resolution of Disputes"; and Jolyon Thomas, author of "Faking Liberties: Religious Freedom in American-Occupied Japan."

These scholars will discuss their new books exploring religious freedom and the intersection of law and religion in the global context.

The lecture is approved by the Pennsylvania Continuing Legal Education Board for 1.5 substantive CLE credits.
