The Barristers' Association of Philadelphia Inc. sponsored two virtual voting rights town halls featuring Chief Deputy Commissioner Jenné Ayers of the Office of City Commissioner Omar Sabir.
Ayers provided voter education information and addressed audience questions ahead of the June 2 Pennsylvania primaries.
The first event was moderated by Barristers' past president and Law Offices of McMonagle Perri McHugh Mischak and Davis partner Charles Gibbs.
The second event was moderated by Ballard Spahr associate Kahlil Williams.
Topic included registering to vote, voting by mail-in ballot, voting by absentee ballot, the annual ballot request list, voting at a polling place, reporting election complaints, returns and statistics, election security and recent Act 77 voting reforms.
Honored
Derek Demeri was the recipient of the 21st annual Blaine E. Capehart Legal Writing Award, sponsored by Capehart Scatchard.
The award recipient is a 2020 graduate of Rutgers Law School in Camden, New Jersey.
The Mt. Laurel, New Jersey-based firm awarded Demeri with a $2,500 prize in recognition of his legal writing and research abilities.
The firm offers this award to a graduating Rutgers law student on an annual basis in honor of the late Blaine E. Capehart.
Demeri's piece, "Who Needs Legislators? Discrimination Against Sex Workers Is Sex Discrimination Under Title VII," was nominated for the award by Katie Eyer, professor of law, at Rutgers Law School.
Announcements
Cozen O'Connor announced the donation of $25,000 to the PHL COVID-19 Fund, a multisector initiative to help respond to the immediate demands of the community led jointly by the Philadelphia Foundation and the United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey.
The donations received are supporting relief and response work by nonprofits in the Greater Philadelphia Area, five Pennsylvania counties and five Southern New Jersey counties.
Since its inception March 19, the fund raised over $16 million and already announced five rounds of grants, totaling over $13 million back into the community across more than 383 organizations including, Maternity Care Coalition, Betters Tomorro, and Atlantic City Rescue Mission.

J. Brugh Lower of Gibbons has entered an appearance for industrial equipment supplier Devco Corporation in a pending trademark infringement lawsuit. The suit, accusing the defendant of selling knock-off Graco products, was filed Dec. 18 in New Jersey District Court by Rivkin Radler on behalf of Graco Inc. and Graco Minnesota. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Zahid N. Quraishi, is 3:24-cv-11294, Graco Inc. et al v. Devco Corporation.
