Joseph N. Bongiovanni III, founding partner of Bongiovanni & Berger.

Joseph N. Bongiovanni III, a founding partner of Bongiovanni & Berger and former professor at Temple University Fox School of Business, died May 29 at the age of 75.

Bongiovanni handled criminal and commercial litigation matters, including First Amendment rights issues, capital cases in Philadelphia appellate court and criminal cases in federal court. He continued to practice law until his death.

He was a professor at Temple for more than 35 years, teaching law and contracts. He was an editor of a 15-volume legal encyclopedia and a co-author for a piece in The New York Times Pocket MBA Series.

Bongiovanni was active in the Philadelphia community, having run for city district attorney in 2001. He also served as an alternate delegate for three Republican national conventions.

In the local legal community, he had stints as chairman of the Justinian Society of Philadelphia and chairman of the Philadelphia Bar Association small business committee, as well as a panel member of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court disciplinary board.

In addition his involvement in legal organizations, Bongiovanni was a member of the Marine Corps Law Enforcement Foundation, the Union League of Philadelphia, the Clover Club, Bala Golf Club and the Federalist Society.

He clerked for several judges following his 1969 graduation from Temple University Beasley School of Law, including for his father Judge Joseph N. Bongiovanni Jr.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Katherine Bongiovanni; his children, Mary Elizabeth and Joseph N. Bongiovanni IV; four grandchildren; and his siblings, Elisa Bongiovanni and Dr. Andrew Bongiovanni.

The family is requesting, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made in Bongiovanni's honor to the Support Center for Child Advocates or the Marine Corps Law Enforcement Foundation.
