Elected and Appointed
Meyer, Unkovic & Scott partner Tony J. Thompson was elected to serve on the Allegheny County Bar Association board of governors.
Thompson focuses his practice on complex commercial litigation with an emphasis on real estate disputes, including ownership, easement and boundary disputes, land use and zoning hearings, and commercial evictions.
He provides counsel to owners, property managers, developers and retail and office tenants.
He also routinely assists the firm's business clients with their development of risk-avoidance policies and procedures.
Thompson handles cases involving breach of contract, trade secrets, infringement and misappropriation claims, products liability defense and other complex commercial litigation in state and federal courts, as well as arbitration proceedings.
He is chair ACBA of the 2020 Bench Bar Conference.
Thompson is also a council member and currently serves as chair of the ACBA civil litigation section and is a member of the ACBA committee for diversity and inclusion.
He serves on the council of the ACBA Homer S. Brown division.
He is vice chair of the Pennsylvania Bar Association minority bar committee and serves on the board of directors for the Sarah Heinz House associate board.
Thompson is a past recipient of the ACBA's Homer S. Brown division's Young Leader Award, which is awarded to an attorney under the age of 40 who exhibits leadership qualities and a commitment to the promotion of equality and the advancement of justice among the African American community.
Thomspon earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law.

The American Bar Association is set to hold a Zoom webinar titled "The Department of Education's New Title IX Regulations: A Closer Look."
The program is scheduled to be held from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday.
Will Creeley, co-chair of the ABA administrative law and regulatory education committee, is slated to serve as moderator.
The panel will include Patricia Hamill, partner at Conrad O'Brien; Laura Dunn, founding partner of the L.L. Dunn Law Firm; and Joseph Storch, associate general counsel in the State University of New York Office of General Counsel

Jay Coogan—an attorney who advises clients in mergers and acquisitions, private equity transactions, securities offerings, capital financings and corporate governance matters—joined
Ballard Spahr as a partner in the business and transactions department.
Coogan brings more than 20 years of experience representing clients in industries ranging from technology, manufacturing and business services to consumer products and health care.
He represents public and private companies in M&A and securities issues and helps private equity firms and investors in the purchase, sale, financing and operation of their portfolio companies.
Coogan counsels investment banks and issuers in securities offerings and represents both venture capital firms and emerging businesses seeking growth funding.
Prior to joining Ballard Spahr, he was a partner in DLA Piper's Philadelphia office.
Often called upon to serve as outside general counsel to private companies, Coogan advises on legal and business matters, such as regulatory issues, entity formation, corporate governance, capitalization, equity compensation, capital raising and contracts.
Coogan's experience includes advising health systems, MSOs and rehab, senior care and HCIT companies on transactions and compliance, and he is the former general counsel of a NYSE-traded national medical rehabilitation services provider.

The case, filed Oct. 2 in Massachusetts District Court by the Brown Law Firm on behalf of Stephen Austen, accuses certain officers and directors of misleading investors in regard to Symbotic's potential for margin growth by failing to disclose that the company was not equipped to timely deploy its systems or manage expenses through project delays. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton, is 1:24-cv-12522, Austen v. Cohen et al.

Edmund Polubinski and Marie Killmond of Davis Polk & Wardwell have entered appearances for data platform software development company MongoDB and other defendants in a pending shareholder derivative lawsuit. The action, filed Oct. 7 in New York Southern District Court by the Brown Law Firm, accuses the company's directors and/or officers of falsely expressing confidence in the company’s restructuring of its sales incentive plan and downplaying the severity of decreases in its upfront commitments. The complaint was filed Sept. 4 in Connecticut District Court by attorney Robert M. Berke on behalf of former employee George Edward Steins, who was arrested and charged with employing an unregistered home improvement salesperson. The complaint alleges that had Sunrun informed the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection that the plaintiff's employment had ended in 2017 and that he no longer held Sunrun's home improvement contractor license, he would not have been hit with charges, which were dismissed in May 2024.
