The city of Philadelphia, along with several residents who have been affected by gun violence, has sued the state of Pennsylvania for not allowing local jurisdictions to enact their own gun safety laws.

In a 95-page complaint filed Oct. 7, the plaintiffs, including gun control group CeaseFirePA, claimed that the state legislature “handcuffs” the city and other municipalities that want to put in place local gun laws stronger than those enacted by the state. Philadelphia’s lawsuit comes during a record year of citywide gun violence.
