A Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas judge last week ordered local attorney Donald Haviland to pay more than $20,000 in outstanding fees to retired Judge Mark Bernstein, who served as arbitrator in a long-standing dispute between Haviland and his former colleagues at Kline & Specter, in spite of Haviland’s assertion that Bernstein was biased against him.

Judge Nina Wright-Padilla granted Bernstein’s June 2020 motion to enter judgment against Haviland in the amount of $20,730. Haviland had requested in his response to the motion that the retired judge return the amount already paid, as well as pay civil damages for Bernstein’s alleged role in causing Haviland to lose arbitration rights in a 14-year dispute involving former colleagues at Kline & Specter.
