An obscure lawyer regulatory panel in Washington on Friday received perhaps one of its most publicly visible assignments yet: a referral from a federal judge who has broadly questioned a lawyer behind a lawsuit challenging the legitimacy of Joe Biden’s presidential victory.

The judge, James Boasberg of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, referred the attorney, Erik Kaardal of the Minneapolis-based firm Mohrman, Kaardal & Erickson, to the court’s Committee on Grievances, a panel that weighs attorney compliance with local federal trial court rules.
