The justices ruled that the trial judge did not have the authority to replace the DA. Judge Anne Marie Coyle made the move based on her view of Philadelphia prosecutors' stance in the case.

The Philadelphia judge who appointed a "special prosecutor" to take over for the city's District Attorney's Office because, she said, prosecutors were not properly pursuing a violation of parole hearing had no power to do so, a unanimous Pennsylvania Supreme Court has ruled.
In 2018, Judge Anne Marie Coyle of the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas appointed a special prosecutor in a case captioned Commonwealth v. Mayfield.
