  • On April 28, from 5:30-6:30 p.m., HIAS Pennsylvania will host its 2021 Golden Door Awards: A Diverse America is a Strong America, highlighting the critical work that elected officials, congregations,and immigrants themselves do to support refugees and immigrants in the Greater Philadelphia Area. This year, HIAS will honor Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon for her outstanding leadership in extending the Liberian Refugee Immigration Fairness Act, and support for the immigrants in the community; the Refugee Access Center at Snyder Church for their continual support of refugees and immigrants in South Philadelphia throughout the pandemic and beyond; and Ali Arif and Lara Ali, former HIAS Pennsylvania clients who have become leaders in their community, working within the Philadelphia School District to make it welcoming to immigrants and refugees.   • On May 4, Take Action Philly will present a virtual forum, Redistricting and Gerrymandering: The Good, The Bad & The Ugly, from 4-5:30 p.m. This free virtual event is open to the public and will focus on how redistricting works in Pennsylvania; how redistricting can result in political and prison gerrymandering; and the potential impact of House Bill 38, the proposed constitutional amendment that would create representative districts for Pennsylvania appellate court judges. The program will feature experts from local public interest legal organizations, Villanova, the University of Pennsylvania and the NAACP.
