In the hours before a Minnesota jury’s verdict was announced in the trial of former police officer Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court agreed to hear arguments in a police-involved shooting case that occurred in Philadelphia, with the appeal taking aim at the state’s use of force law.

The high court agreed Tuesday afternoon to hear arguments in the criminal prosecution of ex-police officer Ryan Pownall, who was charged by the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office with criminal homicide, possession of an instrument of crime and recklessly endangering another person in connection with the fatal June 2017 shooting of David Jones. The charges came after a grand jury investigation recommended charging Pownall in the shooting.
