In 2020, deeply moved by the nationwide response to the tragic killing of George Floyd, firm chair Jami McKeon launched an initiative that is perhaps unique in the history of Big Law, “Mobilizing for Equality” (MFE). This initiative seeks to develop, through the efforts of 14 working groups, lasting solutions in the critical areas of voting rights, education, systemic racism, and, of course, law enforcement.

Among the first lawyers McKeon turned to was Polite, himself a former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Louisiana (New Orleans), who joined the firm in 2018. Polite had already been working internally as a co-leader of the Black Lawyer Network, one of the firm’s “affinity groups” dedicated to providing support, mentorship and leadership to diverse lawyers. Now he also serves on the firm’s overall leadership committee overseeing the strategy for MFE’s 14 working groups, and he co-leads one of the groups, “Conversation on Privilege and Anti-Racism.” This task force is charged with developing an internal platform for small group discussions on topics including racism, discrimination, power, and privilege to create changes in our collective understanding, discourse, decisions, and behavior.
