Lawyer Michael van der Veen, who represented former President Donald Trump at his second impeachment trial, said in a recent court filing that he had legal grounds to sue Philadelphia attorney Theodore Schwartz for an allegedly defamatory article Schwartz wrote about van der Veen’s involvement with the Trump case.

In a response to Schwartz’s preliminary objections to Van der Veen’s lawsuit, the plaintiff argued that Schwartz’s article calling van der Veen a “mercenary, open for retaining to the highest bidder”—published as a commentary piece in The Legal—portrayed him in a false light and negatively impacted his reputation by allegedly claiming van der Veen violated attorney ethics rules.
