An Allegheny County jury issued a $12.8 million verdict to chemical manufacturer Axiall Corp. over a 2016 incident in which a ruptured tank car released 178,400 pounds of chlorine gas into the air, but found the plaintiff partially responsible for the accident.

The jury determined that defendants Rescar and AllTranstek were negligent in their work repairing and inspecting the tank, respectively, prior to the incident, but also found Axiall 40% negligent for using a railroad car that was not recommended for transporting hazardous materials. AllTranstek was found to be 20% liable, and Rescar was found to be 40% liable. The $12.8 million verdict does not take into account contributory negligence.
