The Pennsylvania Supreme Court was split in its opinion over whether former Chicago Bears defensive back Craig Steltz should be granted a new trial based on what the plaintiff alleged was an “improper and unfounded” question by defense counsel to one of its own experts.

On Wednesday, in a 4-3 Supreme Court decision, the majority reversed the state Superior Court’s order for a new trial in the former NFL player’s medical malpractice trial against surgeon Dr. William Meyers, Vincera Core Institute and Vincera Institute. The trial court had called for a mistrial after Steltz’s attorney argued the defense counsel asked an improper question, a decision that was upheld by the Superior Court.
