After a Philadelphia law firm was paid $7.7 million for its work representing an aging Denver-based oil tycoon, the family sued, alleging their father was manipulated. Now a related lawsuit brought by the law firm has been stayed after a federal judge decided it would be best to let the dispute play out in Colorado state court.

On Thursday, U.S. District Judge Eduardo Robreno of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania ruled that the lawsuit Marks & Sokolov v. McMinimee should not be remanded to the Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas where it was initially filed, but should rather remain in federal court. Further, the judge determined that Marks & Sokolov’s suit, which is seeking an injunction and declaratory judgment, should be stayed pending the outcome of the related litigation in Colorado.
