Banks’ most significant result from 2021 includes a matter involving firm client Temple University. She represented Temple University in a victory in Branch v. Temple University, in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. The matter involved a plaintiff, who brought race claims under Section 1981 and Title VII for his discipline and termination against Temple and two individual defendants. The plaintiff also claimed a violation of his FMLA rights and retaliation under all of the statutes.

The firm’s litigation team led by Banks had five days of trial, and the jury deliberated for six hours before returning a complete defense verdict on all counts. The trial involved over 15 witnesses and over 200 documentary and video exhibits.

How did you develop your practice?

When I began my legal career 29 years ago, the first steps I took to build my practice was to learn the practice of lawto establish my legal credentials and focus on building relationships, inside and outside the firm. Then, I began to build my employment practice.

I devoted a significant amount of time becoming immersed in employment law and, from there, developed a noteworthy success rateboth in terms of summary judgment and trial. Through that work and my service on various boards, I earned the respect and trust of my colleagues and adversaries alike, and the work naturally followed. I also prioritized making sincere connections with folks, which has led to true friendships with my client contacts.

How did you remain effective in light of all the challenges the legal field faced?

I stay nimble and adapt. I stay on top of trends and pay attention to the facts and nuances of cases and statutory changes in the employment realm.

What is the best advice you ever received?

I’ve received lots of sage advice: Always strive to give the best of yourself in every way. Pursue excellence. Ask yourself what you want, what you need, and what you’re striving for. Never leave a question unasked because you could miss out on an opportunity.
