The drop-off in legal work following the unprecedented demand of the past few years has led many law firms to begin weighing layoffs.
For a handful of Big Law firms in New York and California, the reductions are already underway, with Cooley, Gunderson Dettmer Stough Villeneuve Franklin & Hachigian, Kirkland & Ellis, Goodwin Procter, and most recently Stroock & Stroock & Lavan announcing reductions in both attorneys and staff. Law firm leaders are also citing layoffs as a growing concern for 2023, which faces a uncertain economic outlook as the possibility of a recession continues to grow.
