Matthew Johnson, Jones Day

Johnson's guiding influence starts in Pittsburgh, with the diverse practice group he has grown in Pennsylvania, and extends throughout the firm to Cleveland, California, and even so far as Taiwan. In 2022-2023 alone, Johnson worked on career development projects, including law review articles and other publications, with associates in 15 of 18 of Jones Day's U.S. offices. Jones Day's PTAB litigation blog, managed by Johnson, publishes between 100-150 articles per year on strategy and practice before the USPTO's Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), and his engagement with dozens of associates on that blog provides opportunities for associates to learn the substance of practice and a vehicle for associates to broaden their reach and notoriety as knowledgeable, published practitioners.

Johnson's mentees recognize him as being central to their success. "Matt has a wealth of knowledge of all things related to patent law and he is more than willing to share that understanding with junior attorneys. Matt provides ample growth opportunities for those under his supervision including drafting briefs, deposing witnesses, and arguing during hearings before the Patent Office. Above all, Matt is kind and cares deeply about the development of young attorneys," associate Robby Breetz, from the firm's Cleveland office, said.
