John Gregory, General Counsel, Streamlight

Streamlight manufactures high-end flashlights for commercial and personal use, including -military-grade products that are sold largely to law enforcement. In recent years these products have been the victim of extensive counterfeiting.

To combat this, Gregory developed innovative partnerships with industry leaders, including Amazon and eBay. With Amazon, Gregory partnered in a pilot program wherein Amazon initiates suit on the brandowner's behalf, which has saved significant funds. Gregory has also cultivated relationships with other online platforms, educating each on the counterfeiting approaches used by infringers. He also partnered the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, collecting information about counterfeiters and coordinating with USPIS, and joining raids at the offending addresses from which the counterfeiting originated.

Gregory also has coordinated with Customs, educating them as to methods of identifying counterfeits, which has yielded contacts from Customs and the DHS when counterfeit products arrive at the border. In one innovative example, Gregory partnered with a Pennsylvania law firm to seek and obtain permission from a Pennsylvania federal court for an ex parte seizure of dangerous counterfeits used by law enforcement, which resulted in dozens of DHS, FBI and local law enforcement authorities simultaneously raiding three warehouses in three different time zones. These efforts have not only protected Streamlight's bottom line, but also its image and reputation, minimized marketplace confusion, and preserved the safety of its purchasers.
