The judge who will oversee Donald Trump’s latest indictment is no stranger to the former president, his associates and supporters. U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan has handled some of the most high-profile cases against Trump, his administration and those who marched on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. 

“The country is watching to see what the consequences are to something that has not ever happened in the history of the country before,” Chutkan told Jan. 6 defendant Matthew Mazzocco after he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges. “There has to be consequences for participating in an attempted violent overthrow of the government beyond sitting at home.”
