United States Steel Corp., Koppers and Clairton 1314B L.P. were hit with a wrongful death lawsuit on Oct. 25 in Pennsylvania Court of Common Pleas for Allegheny County. The court action, filed by D’Amico Law Offices on behalf of the estate of a former employee, accuses the defendants of failing to monitor and control emissions from its coke ovens and batteries, exposing employees to dangerous chemicals such as benzene. According to the complaint, exposure to such emissions caused the decedent’s death from myelodysplastic syndrome. Counsel have not yet appeared for the defendants. The case is GD-23-012419, Zellers vs Clairton 1314B L.P. etal.
