As a Common Pleas Court judge, can I invest in a business run by a family member?

Common Pleas judges are restricted in their business and fiduciary duties as are appellate judges in Pennsylvania, and that is the way it should be. The judicial salary, at least in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania, is adequate with benefits. That is not to suggest that judges are not worth more. In this writer’s opinion, Common Pleas, appellate judges and federal district judges should be paid more. But unlike 20 or 30 years ago, the salary is livable. The purpose of increasing the salary over the last 30 or so years was to give a sense of judicial independence, and free the judicial officer from concerns about economics.
