In the 39 years the soft-spoken 63-year-old has been at the paper, he helped refocus the sleepy publication, centered exclusively on court notices and listings, into a full-throated journalistic enterprise, and also was part of the talks to determine whether the-then independent company should buy, or be sold to ALM.
