July 1 marks the effective date for three new data privacy laws as Texas, Oregon and Florida join the growing list of states with consumer data privacy laws. Then, a few months later, Montana’s data privacy law will become effective on Oct. 1.

Businesses should assess whether these laws apply to them and, if so, take steps to comply before the effective dates or as soon as possible if those dates have passed. With consumer data privacy laws effective in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Utah and Virginia, businesses that are already updating their privacy compliance programs will find many of the requirements in Texas, Oregon and Florida to be familiar and to follow much of the same overall framework. However, the latter laws do have some unique characteristics. Here are some highlights:
